GO Project

Through our involvement with the Youth Sport Trust and the ‘Start to play’ programme, we are privileged to have been provided with the opportunity to consult with many pre-school settings.

Throughout our discussions it became apparent that practitioners were concerned that parents/carers did not adequately understand the importance, for children of pre-school age, to gain the basic skills developed through interactive play. Practitioners, throughout the settings, considered that the development of such basic skills as being essential to promote wellbeing, interaction and communication, and most helpful for young children to acclimatise to a pre-school environment and the transition to Key Stage 1.

The importance of these basic elements is an integral part of the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 physical development requirement and, as such, we were delighted to be approached by Stevenage Sporting Futures Team (SSFT), formerly Stevenage School Sports Partnership, to assist them in the development of the ‘Go Project’. This was specifically conceived to encourage parents and carers to not only interact with their children in their home settings but also to help them develop the basic skills that the pre-school settings felt were being overlooked. This experience for the children would enhance their learning and self-esteem when in the next Key Stage of their development.
Go Bag contents
The ‘Go Project’ is far from just another ‘equipment and resource package’ it is a child friendly take home resource based around the Early Years Foundation and Key Stage 1 Physical Development requirement. The Go Project is also aligned to the Change4Life campaign, to its objectives and to the Department of Health. The Take Home Activity Cards have been created, taking into account the practitioners’ concerns with regards to the inability of many parents/carers to interact with their children through the use of simple basic skills, which, although often taken for granted and overlooked by adults, are ideally suited to aiding young children to develop and master the essential elements that are required to initiate a healthy and active start to life.

The ‘Go Project’ encourages parents/carers and their children to play together, to be more active, and also promotes eating more fruit and vegetables, all contributing to a healthier future. Each of the 30 different Take Home Go Bags contains a piece of equipment and an Activity Card giving ideas on how to use the equipment and also promote a healthy lifestyle.  This should be enough varied equipment, when used with the cards to make everyone happy!

Bupa - Start to Move: developing physical literacy
Key Stage 1 Training Linking in with the Go Project to raise awareness of healthy lifestyles and increase parental engagement We would like your school to be part of an exciting national pilot scheme which aims to transform outcomes for children through an innovative approach to Physical Education at Key Stage 1. Start to Move is a new programme which will help primary schools teach the fundamental movement skills required for 4 – 7 year olds. The programme aims to provide children with a foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity, enabling them to be physically literate, confident and healthy movers. Start to Move is a free programme that starts with a training session delivered by experienced national trainers. Teachers are then supported on an ongoing basis by local mentors and through utilizing the Start to Move website. The website, www.starttomovezone.com, will be live in the coming months and from February will feature video clips of children demonstrating their progression in activities; how they have adopted the basic movement skills and developed these into more complex activities. The programme, an exciting new partnership between Youth Sport Trust and Bupa, the leading international healthcare group, is based on extensive national and international research of best Physical Education practice. It has been informed by consultation with UK head teachers, teachers, parents and children. By engaging children while they are still learning about what it means to be healthy, Bupa hopes to inspire them to be the next generation’s fit, healthy adults. Bupa is dedicated to empowering people to take positive steps to live longer healthier, happier lives. Key Objectives of the Start to Move programme To develop an innovative approach to teaching KS1 Physical Education, placing physical development and core movement skills at the centre of learning. To align the teaching of Physical Education with the teaching of other subjects, taking advantage of primary teachers’ wider skills and enabling them to recognise their ability to deliver a high quality PE experience. To enable schools to deliver high quality Physical Education as one of four compulsory National Curriculum subjects. The programme will build on each child’s previous achievements and meet the diverse needs. What commitment is required from a pilot school? • Full attendance by a member of staff to a free training day on the above date • Piloting resources and Start to Move approach • Completion of a pre-training and post-training questionnaire, which forms part of the independent research of the programme by Roehampton Institute. • Completion of evaluative material on training and web resources to aid national roll out • To cascade learning from the training within your school We do hope your school will be a part of this exciting new opportunity. This is a free course for partner SFT schools and we welcome schools from outside of Stevenage but would kindly ask for a £15 contribution towards administration.
